BERNAMA.COM, Kuala Lumpur, Dec 10,2002-
Malaysia is capable of having its own Information Technology
(IT) giants, perhaps within a decade, Works Minister
Datuk Seri S.Samy Vellu said Tuesday. He said this was
possible in view of the continued enthusiasm and enterprise
shown by the government and the people.
"This (having our own IT giants) is
very necessary to continue the truly success story that
Malaysia is in the eyes of the world today," he said
at the TiE Awards Nite organised by the Malaysian chapter
of the IndUS Entrepreneurs (TiE Malaysia) here.
Ten Malaysian entrepreneurs received
the TiE Awards from Samy Vellu for their "drive and
courage shown and the difference they have made in the
IT field".
TiE, a global, non profit organisation
was founded in 1992 in the Silicon Valley to create
a pool of intellectual capital in which large entrepreneurs
worldwide can share, create wealth, and help the society.
Since its founding, TiE affiliated
individuals have created business with an estimated
market value of RM760 billion. Samy Vellu said Malaysia's
drive to become an IT hub has been a great success,
making it one of the best in the region, if not the
world.
He said the feat was attributed mainly
to investment in terms of infrastructure and the government's
commitment in providing the ideal setting for the IT
industry to flourish.
"I am confident that eventually Malaysians
will excel in the IT industry just as we have done it
with others, be it agricultural, manufacturing or the
services industries," he said.
Samy Vellu said he was aware that there
were many countries that had a headstart in the IT industry
especially the United States, Europe, Korea and Japan.
Lately, the Indians have become the greatest proponents
of the IT industry both at home and abroad.
"As such, we have a race to catch up
to succeed. We have to depend on our academia, our youth
and our entrepreneurs. They will only succeed if they
dare to dream, dare to trust their own talents and dare
to believe that we can do it in the true spirit of "Malaysia
Boleh"," the minister said.
He paid tribute to TiE Malaysia Chapter,
saying that it can be truly proud of today's event as
it was not easy to identify and mentor 10 entrepreneurs
within a year of TiE's commencement of activities in
Malaysia. -BERNAMA

THE SUN, Nov 21st, 2002- Ten Malaysian
entrepreneurs will be selected as the recipients of
The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) Awards on Dec 10.
TiE charter members, all leaders with
demonstrated success in their respective fields, who
mentored the winners, will also be honoured during the
event to recognize their contribution towards entrepreneurship
in Malaysia.
The recipients were selected on the
basis of the drive and courage they have shown going
their own way, and the difference they have made in
the Information Technology field.
“We want to reward great ideas. But
great ideas alone aren’t enough,” said Tan Sri G. Gnanalingam,
TiE Malaysia president.“So, we also look into the companies’
turnover, their profitability, and to what extent do
their products or services have an international reach.
“Almost all these companies are young.
They were either struggling, or were in their formative
years when they came to TiE Malaysia’s attention. And,
with the help of TiE Malaysia, they have transformed
themselves into winners. That needs recognition.”
TiE Malaysia is confident that this
event, believed to be first of its kind, will create
a greater awareness among Malaysians of the opportunities
that are available to them though TiE.

of entrepreneurs who have made it, who go out of their
way to help other entrepreneurs to make it,” said Gnanalingam.
“It is India’s classic guru-sishya,
or teacher-student relationship, applied to a business
contact.
“Many Malaysians may have the talent,
the right attitude, and even a winning idea, but they
may not have access to unbiased guidance and business
counseling, or capital venture.”
